BRAVE

Anti-immigrant riots have swept across Ireland recently, and the killing of 17-year-old Irish-Nigerian George Nkencho by the police has shocked Dubliners and the entire country. Ashley, a vibrant writer and fierce activist, breathes life into her words. Roxana, a filmmaker, paints her world through the lens, capturing the nuances of her artistic soul. Moses, immersed in the world of classical music, discovers a profound sense of belonging as his voice harmonizes with the choir. Their parents emigrated from Zimbabwe, Romania, and the Philippines, and have planted new roots in Ireland, forging a home in this diverse land.

Despite their varied backgrounds, Ashley, Roxana, and Moses embody the essence of second-generation ethnic minority youth in Ireland. Amid the social unrest over issues of immigration, they share their heartfelt reflections on how the Irish education system has shaped their integration and belonging. Through their unique perspectives, their stories intertwine, weaving a rich tapestry of identity, belonging, and the ever-present shadows of racism, yet with an unwavering hope for a brighter future.

This documentary springs from a three-year research project conducted by the Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship Education at Dublin City University. Supported by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, and DICE, this project seeks to illuminate the voices of those who dream of a more inclusive tomorrow.
